Golden Moment
“If memories could be canned, I hope they last forever; if it must expire, I hope they last for centuries.”--- Chungking Express
Founded in 1936, this soy sauce company has offered traditional taste of Cantonese food for three generations in Hong Kong. The company, snuggled in a humble storehouse, continues to manufacture condiments for every family to enjoy a good meal, from a delicious dinner after a long day at work, a joyful reunion on a holiday to a warm gathering at the dining table. As said in the movie Chungking Express, happiness, angriness, sadness, joy… if everyday memories could be canned, it is hoped that they never expire.
In this project, colors are orchestrated as if from a movie set to bring out glorious memories of Hong Kong in the old days. Three areas of various functions are rendered into a whole through special spatial elements and structural arrangements that speak the common language from a momentous period.
Opening the front door, one will see light and shadows deflected by the phoenix logo on the printed glass in the kitchen. The metal installation in the bar area is made of window grilles that once guarded every household in the old town, while the winding frames and seamless mosaic illustrate the beauty of the historic city.
The black and white floral tiles carry the weight of copious memory, which is released when hot dishes are served. Above the dining table are bird cages, the kind that adorned neighborhoods in the past. The vintage-styled printed glass also allows silhouettes to bring out beautiful imaginations to transport us back to a time when laughter and chatter filled a local tea restaurant.
Moving to the guest room after a satisfying meal, we are greeted by common peonies that emit a dreamy elegance alluding to the imagery of dancing ladies in the old town. Gentle glow connects the senses, so that from the eyes to the tip of our tongues, we are enwrapped by awakened memories and irresistible nostalgia.
Hong Kong’s charm lies in the co-existence of old and new. It is all the more important for the soy sauce company to preserve traditional ingredients and tastes as new products, new machineries and new facilities take over its storehouse. By doing so, the household name that has been around for three generations shall last forever, never to expire.
